Improve your smile with a dental crown or bridge
Did you know that when your teeth are restored or replaced by crowns and bridges they’ll feel and look more like natural teeth than being replaced by a denture?
Crowns and bridges are permanently fixed prostheses that are exactly like your natural teeth.
Traditionally, crowns and bridges were made out of materials like gold or porcelain fused to gold. Thanks to improvements in dental material science and technology we now offer metal-free, all-ceramic restorations that are just as strong and look amazing.
At Mosman Village Dentistry, we take pride in delivering high-quality dental solutions (crowns, bridges and dental implants) with precision, superior aesthetics and reliable longevity. To ensure our patients get the best crowns and bridges we only work with local ceramic technicians.
What is a crown and why might I need one?
A crown is used to cover or “cap” the entire surface of your damaged tooth to restore its natural contours and protect it against breaking down further. If you’ve got a structurally compromised tooth, a crown may be recommended to:
- Replace a large filling when there isn’t enough tooth structure remaining
- Prevent a weak tooth from fracturing
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Improve a tooth’s appearance by changing the shape, colour and alignment
- Restore a tooth treated with root canal therapy
What is a bridge and when is it used?
Bridges can be used to replace one or more missing teeth in your jaw. They’re essentially multiple crowns attached in a line, with an artificial tooth attached in between the crowns. Bridges are cemented to your natural teeth adjacent to the empty space. An alternative to replacing a missing tooth with a bridge is a dental implant crown.
What is involved in having a porcelain crown?
Step 1: Tooth preparation and accurate impression:
This process takes 1 appointment.Your tooth is anaesthetized and prepared by carefully removing only the minimal amount of tooth structure required for the crown. Any decay is removed and old amalgam or failed old fillings are replaced with a new foundation. We then take an impression of your teeth for the ceramist. While your new crown is being made, your prepared tooth is protected with a temporary crown.
Step 2: Fitting of the new crown:
This process takes 1 appointment.Approximately 3 weeks after the initial appointment, your new porcelain crown is ready to be inserted. The tooth is anaesthetized for comfort and the crown is checked for accurate fit, shade and bite. Once we’re both satisfied with the result, your new crown is permanently bonded to the tooth with an adhesive agent that’s set with an Ultraviolet Blue light.
The best way to look after your new crown or bridge
Immediately after the new crown is bonded to your tooth, it’s normal to feel sensitivity. After a few days this will settle down. It’s important to note that the roots under your crowns and bridges can decay just like natural teeth. To maintain your new crown or bridge, good oral hygiene and regular check-ups are essential. They can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth.
Our dental technicians and laboratories
We only use Australian based local technicians and ceramists. Firstly, we believe in supporting local businesses in dental industry. Secondly, using Australian based laboratory ensures all the restorations meet safety standards set out by Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration. Crowns and bridges made overseas are not required to meet these standards.
Lastly and most importantly, we work with select few ceramists who have consistently demonstrated high-quality work using the best material available. We build relationship with our technicians and have a clear understanding of each other’s work and level of expectation.
